Trend Radar Week 43/2026: Google Search goes live
Trend Radar filters the week’s developments for freelancers and small businesses in Germany. Week 43 covers Google’s conversational live search, new AI tools for daily work, EU AI Act transparency rules that already apply, and the organisational gaps behind many security problems.
Google Search Live turns search into a conversation
Google launched Search Live in Germany in early October. Users can point the camera in the Google app at a product, sign or situation and ask questions aloud. Search answers conversationally and adds links from the web. This matters to local firms because customers are moving from short keywords to natural, situational questions. What does this mean for you? Answer the questions customers actually ask on site: whether you repair a specific model, have an appointment today or serve their town. Clear service pages, genuine images with useful alt text, current opening hours and structured business data help search systems understand your offer. Gemini is moving from writing tool to business assistant
On 20 October, Google presented new Gemini functions for small businesses. They include research across sources, assistance inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, and configurable AI agents for recurring workflows. The useful question is not how many features exist, but whether one defined process becomes faster and more reliable.
What does this mean for you? Test one limited task, such as summarising enquiries, drafting replies or collecting information for a quotation. Decide which data may enter the system, who reviews the result and how you measure time or quality. Do not upload customer data, applications or confidential documents without checking the provider and your privacy obligations.
AI transparency has been a current duty since August
The European Commission updated its AI Act overview on 20 October. Article 50 transparency rules have applied since 2 August 2026. People should be able to recognise certain interactions with AI, while specific artificially generated or manipulated content also requires disclosure. This does not turn every spell-check into a legal notice, but public chatbots and convincing synthetic media require attention.
What does this mean for you? List the AI systems visible to customers: chatbots, automated advice, synthetic voices, images or video. Use a plain-language label, assign a responsible person and document approval. For internal drafts, human review usually matters more than a public label. Cybersecurity often fails on time and ownership
A new ESET study on German businesses shows a familiar contradiction: most companies consider IT security central, but only about one third believe their protection is sufficient. The reported bottlenecks include expertise, time and budget. For small firms, websites, email, cloud accounts and booking systems are already business-critical. Source: ESET Germany, 20 October 2026.
What does this mean for you? Define who installs updates, checks backups, blocks a lost account and coordinates an incident. Enable two-factor authentication for hosting, domains, email and the CMS. Test whether a backup can actually be restored. Useful basics: /ratgeber/website-wartung-warum/ and /ratgeber/website-backup-wichtig/.
In brief
- Search Live currently runs through the Google app, making a strong mobile website essential.
- Pilot new AI features on one measurable process before they touch customer data or decisions.
- On 15 October, the NRW consumer association reported a court success against Snap over GDPR access rights.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to rebuild my website for Google Search Live?
No. First improve mobile usability, practical service answers, local data, image alt text and current contact details. These basics also support classic search.
Does an AI chatbot on my website need a label?
Users should clearly recognise that they are interacting with AI. Also review privacy, responsibility, answer limits and handover to a person.
What is the best first step for stronger IT security?
Assign responsibility and enable two-factor authentication for critical accounts. Then address updates, separate backups and a tested incident process.
