QR code business card: how to connect print and website
A QR code business card can move a personal conversation to your website, contact details or booking page. It only works well when the destination, print quality, mobile page and measurement are planned together.
Where should the QR code on a business card lead?
Open the exact next step you want after the meeting. This may be a compact service page with a call button, a consultant profile with booking, or a local business page with opening hours and directions. A generic homepage is useful only if it makes that next step immediately clear.
People scan while on the move. State who you are, what you offer and what they should do next. Phone and email links must work with one tap.
A vCard is helpful when the main goal is saving contact details. A mobile page is more flexible for services, proof and current information. You can combine both.
Digital QR business card or normal website?
A digital business card is usually a short personal profile, useful at trade fairs and networking events. A complete website can also answer questions about services, pricing, process, privacy and references.
For a small German business, a focused page on its own domain is often the most robust option. It stays under your control and can grow later. An external card platform creates another dependency if prices, redirects or service availability change.
With a managed website subscription, the page can be maintained together with the main site when roles, numbers, offers or booking links change.
- vCard for saving details
- Digital card for a compact profile
- Own landing page for services and enquiries
- Homepage only when the next step is obvious
Static or dynamic QR code: which is better?
A static code contains the final URL and cannot be edited after printing. A dynamic code first uses a redirect that can be changed and sometimes measured, but it remains dependent on the provider and plan.
A short URL on your own domain gives long-term control. Check term, cost, export, privacy and cancellation consequences before using an external dynamic service.
Use HTTPS and a recognisable domain. Germany’s BSI warns that manipulated QR codes can lead to phishing and the destination is not visible from the code itself. A printed domain note builds trust. Source: BSI guidance on quishing, checked 1 November 2026.
How large should a QR code be on a business card?
There is no universal millimetre size. Readability depends on data, printing, contrast, material, camera and distance. Test the final design at real size rather than using the smallest technically possible code.
DENSO WAVE specifies a clear quiet zone of four modules around a QR code. It also describes error correction levels of approximately 7% for L, 15% for M, 25% for Q and 30% for H. Higher correction can improve resilience but increases density. Source: DENSO WAVE QR Code basics, checked 1 November 2026.
Use dark on light, avoid reflective finishes and do not treat a centre logo as harmless. Test a printed sample with several iPhone and Android cameras, angles and lighting conditions.
- Keep four modules clear around the code
- Use strong contrast
- Do not overlap text or patterns
- Test printed real size
- Use several devices and conditions
How should the mobile landing page be designed?
Put the company or name, key benefit and no more than one or two primary actions in the first screen. Large call, email, WhatsApp or booking buttons reduce friction. Avoid slow video, intrusive pop-ups and long introductions.
Keep the page light and current. Use redirects when URLs change and review the printed code regularly. Forms need the same GDPR information and secure transmission as any other website.
Choose one meaningful action such as requesting a callback, booking, viewing an offer or saving contact details. In our assessment, one clear action usually outperforms a full navigation menu on this type of page.
How can scans and enquiries be measured?
Scan totals alone are weak evidence. Measure contact clicks, bookings and enquiries. Use a dedicated short URL or UTM campaign so visits from the card can be separated from other channels.
Privacy-friendly analytics can measure page views and goals without building personal profiles, but the configuration and privacy notice still need checking. Include any external dynamic QR provider in the privacy review.
Test the entire route before printing: scan, loading, layout, buttons, form, confirmation and analytics. Order a proof or small batch before committing to a large print run.
- Define a dedicated URL or UTM campaign
- Measure a real contact goal
- Review analytics and provider privacy
- Retest after URL changes
- Scan a printed proof before the full run
Frequently asked questions
What should a business card QR code open?
A mobile page with your profile, main benefit and one clear action such as calling, booking or saving contact details.
Can a printed QR code be changed later?
A static code cannot. A URL on your own domain can be redirected, while dynamic services also allow changes but create provider dependency.
How small can the code be?
There is no safe universal size. Test the final printed design with several phones instead of relying on a theoretical minimum.
Does the card need a privacy notice?
Not automatically, but the linked site must explain its data processing and any analytics or QR provider must be reviewed.
Is a vCard better than a website?
A vCard saves details quickly; a website adds services, proof and an enquiry path. Combining both is often best.
